21 weeks... size of a banana!

Cupcake is about the size of a banana now! 10.5 inches and weighing about 12.7 ounces (almost to the 1-pound mark!)   During the ultrasound appointment last week, the technician said that I'm measuring within one day of my estimated due date (May 11) and that Cupcake is in the 49th percentile for weight. Sounds like we're right on track!

Been thinking about my baby shower and looking around for invites. Found some cute cards while doing some shopping for Omi's little baby today. I can't wait to send them out! Of course, I'll have to wait just a little bit. I think my shower will  be in March sometime.

My belly button is slowly making it's way out. It's about half as deep as it usually is and it's kind of weird to be able to see the inside of your own belly button. I'm sure it'll be even with the rest of my bulging belly in a few weeks. I also took out my belly button piercing. It was getting a little tight, so I figured I'd rather pull it out now than have it get caught on something or have the skin so tight that it'd be harder to remove. I've had it pierced for about ten years now, so it'll be interesting to see if it closes up.

It's a girl!!

The Cupcake is a girl! Ayla Noelle will be her name.

The ultrasound went well, as far as we could tell. The radiologist will have to take a look at all the scans and then let my midwives know about anything abnormal (they look at the brain and heart, kidneys, etc). Keep your fingers crossed for normal and healthy! We did see little fingers and toes and the face. The tech printed out a couple pictures for us (she even tried to get a 3D picture because we finished fairly early and she said I was fun to scan).

20 weeks (5 months)!---size of a cantaloupe!

A canteloupe, people! It's getting serious now... the size of a small melon. Sheesh. Baby is about 6.5 inches and weighs about 10.6 ounces (still under a pound. 16 ounces=1 pound, in case you didn't know).

Tomorrow's the big day! Well, not the BIG day, but the halfway point and the first time Chris and I will be able to see baby on ultrasound and hopefully find out the sex (babies can be uncooperative sometimes).

By the looks of my stomach, the cupcake is growing just fine. I was worried that I wasn't getting enough calories, but I guess I don't have to worry about it too much. I'm not feeling super tired or anything (definitely more energetic than during the first trimester), don't have any swelling in my ankles or feet, no more nausea, no huge mood swings (that I'm aware of, anyway...). I have moments of dizziness or tiredness from time to time, but gotta say that it's been a pretty good pregnancy so far! My belly button is sloooowly making it's way out and I'm trying to decide if I want to take my belly button piercing out for good or just put a retainer in until after the birth. It's not causing any discomfort right now, so I think I have at least a few weeks to decide.

To be honest, I was a little nervous about this month (December) because exactly a year ago I had a miscarriage. I was only about 4-6 weeks along, really early and probably shouldn't have even known I was pregnant (I only told a few really close friends that I was pregnant, just in case anything happened. It made it easier to only have to tell a few people about the loss and not have everyone asking me how I was feeling). It was sad and hard to deal with for a couple days, but Chris and I both realized that it wasn't the right time (and my body must have had the heads up on something). We decided to take 2010 to ourselves and maybe try to get pregnant in 2011. We really enjoyed the beginning and middle of the year, went camping, took mini road trips, spent nights on the town, talked about getting married, got engaged "officially", traveled to Las Vegas... then our little cupcake decided that it wanted to come a few months early, which was fine with us. We weren't trying to get pregnant, but we also weren't NOT trying, if that makes sense. I think we were both at a point where we figured that we'd been together for about 4 years and if it happened, it happened. I had a feeling something might be up when I was a little dizzy at yoga that week and then not feeling so well the weekend we went to the cabin. Low and behold, tiny pink plus sign! Neither of us were surprised, pretty excited actually (if not cautiously. I didn't want to tell a ton of people until I was past the 3-month mark).

So here we are! Halfway through and going to get bigger by the week. Can't wait!

Ultrasound... coming soon!

4 more days until we get to see our little cupcake! I just realized that I'm way more excited to see baby than to know what the sex is (don't worry, we're still going to find out either way!). We've heard the heartbeat, I've felt it moving around, and I've definitely got the belly, but I think the ultrasound is going to be way awesome and confirm that it's not some weird tumor (hey, there are tumors that have nails and teeth and hair! They're called teratomas).

In case you're interested, here's the link to the waterbirth center where I've been seeing my midwives at (and where I'll deliver the cupcake, barring any emergenices or total lack of a pain tolerance on my part...). http://www.waterbirth.net/   We typically go to the Portland location, but our last prenatal appointment was at the Tualatin location. We were in the Lavender room and it was so nice (it's a little more purple now than what you see in the pictures). At the Portland location, I love the Tierra room (it's done in green with ferns and plant life). I'm determined to deliver in that room, but if it's not available, then I want the Lavender room in Tualatin. I told the midwives that I'd labor in the parking lot until the rooms were available. ;)  I'm sure when the time comes, I won't really care much, but I like to have a little bit of a plan (yes, I know a plan or "birth plan" is not set in stone, it should  be flexible).

And I think I've finally gained some weight! Only about 3-5 pounds, but I'll take it. I know this is the point where it should start picking up as baby starts gaining weight and fat deposits. Right now, the cupcake is about 1/3 of the size it should be at birth, so there's still lots of growing to do in just a few months. I'm going to get huge, I just know it. But I'm not too concerned about it. Looking forward to taking baby on walks and getting back into my gym routine (maybe some running here and there. I know I miss my workouts when I have dreams about running. Sad, isn't it? I'm not even really a "runner"!).

19 weeks---size of a mango!

Baby is now about 6 inches long (head to bottom) and weighs about 8.5 ounces. Cupcake is definitely growing, because the "bump" is definitely becoming a "belly".

One more week until we find out the gender! I wasn't getting really excited about it until now. I'm still okay with either a boy or a girl, though since I know SO many women who are having boys, I'm kind of hoping for a girl a little bit. But really, either is fine, because I do want both eventually.

I've been feeling baby move for a few weeks (maybe since around week 16) and just last week was able to feel it from the outside! I woke up early one morning and couldn't get back to sleep for a few hours, so I went out to the living room to lay on the couch. Cupcake decided to keep me company and had a little dance party. I placed my hand on my stomach, not thinking about it and then all of sudden... BAM! My hand jumped. I didn't think I'd be able to feel it from the outside yet! Unfortunately, Chris hasn't felt it yet. I can only feel it from the outside every so often (usually late at night or early in the morning and the baby has to be positioned just right to be kicking the front). But I've been feeling it move a little more frequently throughout the day, which is fun and reassuring.

I took a trip up to Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island for a few days this last week to visit my "island family" (neighbors from back in 1994!). Everyone was so excited to see the belly that the cupcake is creating. Meggy even did some henna for me!

18 weeks (4 1/2 months)!---size of a sweet potato

Baby's now the size of a sweet potato!
Baby's become amazingly mobile (compared to you, at least), passing the hours yawning, hiccupping, rolling, twisting, kicking, punching, sucking, and swallowing. And baby is finally big enough that you'll soon be able to feel her movements. (from thebump.com
5.6 inches in length (head to bottom, not including legs) and weighs 6.7 ounces!

Turns out that I've been feeling the little cupcake move for a few weeks now, I just wasn't sure that's what it was. But now that it's happening a little more frequently and at different times during the day, I know it's baby dancing around in there! Definitely a relief to have a sign that it's still movin' and groovin' since I don't have the doppler to do sneak attack listening sessions.

Our ultrasound is in two weeks! Really excited to find out the sex and make sure everything is going well and growing as it should be. Not sure how many people are following the blog, but to those who do, a special little tidbit: my two name choices! For a girl, I love the name Ayla (I've had it picked out for years!). Like Kayla, but without the 'K'. There's really not another option. If it's a girl, it's for sure Ayla. For a boy, I'm partial to Bruin (like brewin' a cup of coffee). I really like the name Avery for either a boy or girl, but I fear it will start to become more popular (there's a newer character on Grey's Anatomy named Jackson Avery, but he goes by Avery). I also really like Harper and Marlow. Chris hasn't had any real dislike of any of the names which is really nice. I pretty much told him that I get final say anyway since I have to carry it for 9 months and then go through labor... :) He's not fighting me on that logic.

I opted out of getting the flu shot this season. I've never had the flu shot and don't really feel compelled to get one strictly because I'm pregnant. There isn't solid convincing proof that the shot really helps or hinders anything and my midwife left the option up to me.

Still have yet to gain any weight. I have a prenatal appointment tomorrow with my 2nd midwife (I have two assigned to me in case one can't make  it to my labor. Smart thinking if you ask me!) and I have a feeling she's going to not be stoked to hear that. She's the one that told me that I should plan on gaining 30, if not 40 pounds. 40 pounds?! Are you kidding me? I'm barely 5'1" and weighing around 170 seems really unhealthy, regardless of whether I'm carrying a baby or not. I have more the thought of 25-30 pounds. I'll have to ask my first midwife and see what her opinion is.

Am finally over the "morning" sickness! I tried a night off from half a Unisom pill and felt fine yesterday. Skipped it last night as well and felt fine today (though, I woke up at 5 this morning not feeling well. Couldn't tell if it was an empty stomach, nausea or heartburn, but just was not feeling good at all. Had two little teeny tiny bites of toast, a few sips of water, and went out to the living room to try and sleep in the glider--which, if you haven't heard, I absolutely LOVE! Thanks Peggy! Fell asleep for a little and the toast didn't come back up, so I went back to the bedroom around 6:30 when Chris took the dogs out). Have felt fine the rest of the day! HOORAY!!!

Went to the gym twice last week. TWICE! That's two more times than I went probably all of last month, ha ha. Went again the other morning and hoping to go again Friday after work. Gotta stay active and strong for baby! Hoping to start making it back to yoga once a week in addition to two gym sessions, plus dog walks (we've gotten a few in the last week or so since I'm feeling a little more energy). Don't worry, I'm not pushing it or doing the same workout from before I became pregnant. Just a little light cardio and some weight machines here and there.

Starting to think about a baby shower. One of my best friends offered to throw one for me (she also did my bachelorette party), so we'll have to start organizing and get to planning.

In keeping with the same view as the first picture... the headless side-shot ;)
